Ruby Throated Hummingbird

from $75.00

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a small, energetic species best known as the only hummingbird that regularly breeds in eastern North America—and for its remarkable long-distance migration to and from Central America.

Males are instantly recognizable by their brilliant, iridescent ruby-red gorget, which can shift to black depending on the light. Their upperparts are a shimmering emerald green, contrasting with a clean white underbelly and forked tail. Females lack the red throat and have a white-speckled throat, green back, and rounded tail feathers tipped with white.

Known for their incredible aerial agility, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds hover effortlessly as they sip nectar from flowers, and they also consume small insects for protein. During peak migration, they may be seen feeding intensely to fuel their journey—an extraordinary flight that can include a nonstop crossing over the Gulf of Mexico.

With their jewel-like colors and astonishing endurance, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds offer an unforgettable sight.
